Initially developed at a workshop at RAF Kidbrooke in the 1930s, under the leadership of Wing Commander Oswyn Lywood, the Typex machine was used by the British military during the Second World War to encrypt their secret communications. They were subsequently adopted by many of the Commonwealth nations and were in use long after the war had ended. The story behind the German enigma machine has been well told, but this first NSIST publication ventures into the British story of the development of its indigenous machine.
