Glossary

This Glossary brings together the glossaries from several works published in the years
following the Second World War in an attempt to help modern readers of GC&CS
documents get a clearer understanding of what they mean. I have edited the entries to
avoid duplication and to bring clarity (I hope) to some of the definitions.
Any group of people working on a task closed to outsiders are bound to develop their
own jargon, and this was certainly the case at Bletchley Park. Cryptanalysis and traffic
analysis in particular were new disciplines without any standardised vocabularies. This
glossary includes as well words and expression relating to the physics of
communications, the organisations with which Bletchley Park was in contact, and
German vocabulary adopted for use at BP.

It is more than possible that errors have crept into this work, and that there are some
words missing which readers might like to see defined. If this is the case please contact
tony@nsist.org and we will correct or add to the text.
