Never Mess With The Authorities.

At the beginning of World War Two a field of land belonging to a brother and sister was requisitioned by the War Office for the Radio Security Service site at Gilnahirk. From stories I was told by neighbours they were the most objectionable couple of people you could ever have met, complaining at every opportunity. The RSS one storey buildings of which there were three were far enough away from the farm house to give no cause for concern. Having mind of all the hassle the brother and sister had given to the authorities during the war and post war period it came as no surprise to see the new station building completely blocking the line of site at the front of the farmhouse. Further more the upper floor end window of the new station was looking straight into the farmhouse bedrooms. Had the couple said nothing over the years, the new station could have been pushed back leaving a clear line of site to the front of the farmhouse. You have been warned, pay your taxes and keep your objections to yourself.

When I was exploring the sites around Caithness, I think it was near Newlands of Geise there is a small garden centre and you can see traces of masts etc around the area. A person told me that during WWII the farmers had to take down all their wire fences and were not allowed to use tractors near the site - in those days they would have all been petrol engined.
