External Security

Access to the CSOS Gilnahirk site was the responsibility of a civilian force recruited from the ranks of retired Royal Ulster Constabulary officers. A security hut at the main gate was manned only during a watch change over. Once completed, the main gate being locked, and all external doors of the station were locked and security was then controlled from an office just inside the main door of the station. An intruder alarm system was installed around the main building, but this was only active during the hours of darkness. Although Gilnahirk was a wireless station the security guard had a two way Police radio which was checked each morning and in the event of an intrusion or attack on the station an armed police response could be on site within two minutes from Dundonald RUC Station.
