The Big Dig
NSIST is organising its first ever archaeological dig at the former Second World War transmission site of Windy Ridge in Whaddon village, Buckinghamshire. It is being scheduled between 20-27 May 2026 and we're keen to recruit volunteers to help with the dig. Reclaim Heritage are the lead archaeologists for the project and we're hoping the BBC 'Digging for Britain' team will be coming along to film!
Windy Ridge was the wireless transmission station of the SOG (Special Operations Group) of the Special Communications Unit (SCU). Its job was to transmit the intelligence provided by GC&CS (Government Code & Cypher School) at Bletchley Park to Allied Commanders in operational theatres around the globe. The site is important both nationally and internationally.
